The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday, 15th May 2020 cut the sod for the reactivaction of work for the construction of the forty-four (44) year old Maternity and Children’s Block of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, reported the presidency news website. According to the source, the project is being funded by German Bank, Deutsche Bank and will cost €155 million; it’s expected to be completed within 36 months.
“Once completed the Maternity and the Children’s Block will be a state-of-the-art, modern health edifice with paediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics units”, President Akufo-Addo stated categorically. Recounting on experiences which led to the reactivation of work for the construction of the Block, he noted that, in 2017; his first year as President of the Republic, he paid a 3-day working visit to the Ashanti Region where his itinerary took him to the abandoned Maternity and Children’s Block.
As a matter of fact, “he was made to understand that, the project began in 1976 as part of the Komfo Anokye Hospital expansion project, but came a standstill, it was reactivated in 1999, under the administration of the first president of the of the 4th Republic, His Excellency, Jerry John Rawlings but stalled shortly afterwards. In 2004, the administration of the 2nd President of 4th Repunlic, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufour took it up, but soon after his departure from office in 2009, work on this project was discontinued, until the assumption of office by another NPP administration, the Akufo-Addo government in 2017”, the source disclosed.
After his visit to the project site, President Akufo-Addo pledged his government’s support to assess the situation and ensure the needed funds are secured and made available to complete the health infrastructure. “This led to approval of €155 million loan to finish and equip the Maternity and Children’s Block of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital”. The President reiterated “his delight at being able to cut the sod for work to begin finally, to complete this ultramodern Maternity and Children’s Block”.
