Today; Saturday, 6th March 2021, Ghana celebrates 64th annual Independence Day anniversary at the forecourt of the Jubilee House Accra, which is actually the seat of the government. This year’s edition was a little bit different from the previous ones, due to the global pandemic and measures in place to contain it’s spread.
As a result, there was no Independence Day March past (that involves students from some selected schools, the security services and all others), which has characterised the celebrations for decades. In fact, the ceremony was held virtually and live streamed on Social Media with only a few dignitaries, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, the armed forces and the police present to observe as events unfolded.
Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo inspected the guard of honor and continued to light the perpetual flame to mark the begrinning of the ceremony, which lasted for less than an hour. In his Address, the President stressed the need to redefine our sense of national responsibility, and remove any doubt some may continue to have about our ability to manage our own affairs. “Let’s devote ourselves to the freedom and welfare of Mother Ghana.” he said.
Present at the ceremony was the Vice President, HE Dr Mahamadu Bawumia and his beautiful HE Samira Bawumia. Amongst others include the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr James Oppong Boanuh, and the New Acting Chief of Defense Staff, Rear Admiral Seth Amoama. See the images below!
